Recently LeMay-America's Car Museum received a generous donation of a 1958 Ford Skyliner Retractable in restorable condition from Mrs. Barbara Birt. Mrs. Birt informed us that currently the car was not in museum displayable condition but wanted to offer us a car for our vehicle donation program and we could sell the car and the proceeds from the sale would be a donation to the museum.
The car was described to us as “1958 Ford Retractable, 352 ci with 3 spd + OD, new upholstery and carpet, amateur repaint showing wear, runs but engine is unknown condition. Top not working but almost complete. [There is] typical rust on rockers and corners of trunk [and roof] lid.” After the vehicle was assessed by Collection Management volunteers, work began on getting the top operational. It had most of the parts in place and we were able to get the retractable hardtop working again.Ford Motor Company Produced the Retractable Hardtop "Skyliner" from 1957 through 1959. It was the first retractable hardtop to be mass produced. Operated with by electric motors, the trunk lid on the car opens and the hardtop folds in into a neat package in the trunk. The top sequences through each motion controlled by solenoids, micro-switches, and motors, and is operated with one switch located at the left side of the steering column. It was a marvel of engineering for the time.
