TACOMA, Wash. (June 12, 2014) – LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM) is celebrating 50 years of the Ford Mustang with the June 14 opening of Masters of Mustang, which showcases more than 20 of the most sought after pony cars in history.

“The Ford Mustang is as much a car as it is a piece of America’s heritage,” said Scot Keller, Chief Curator of ACM, the largest car museum in North America. “Masters of Mustang gives ACM the opportunity to tell the car’s story and the stories of the people who helped it become a cultural icon throughout the world.”

The Ford Mustang almost didn’t reach production after a skittish Ford Motor Company witnessed its Edsel brand fizzle in the early 1960s. However, Ford President Lee Iacocca recognized the market underserved young shoppers and fought to keep the coupe in development. In April 1964, the Mustang went on sale and became an overnight success, spurring 263,000 sales its first year and more than 500,000 in 1965.

Masters of the Mustang features a high-performance 1964½ Mustang “K-code” that preceded Ford’s partnership with racer-turned-car-builder Carroll Shelby, a 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350 convertible – one of four produced – other notable ‘Stangs from each decade. Toward the culmination of the exhibit’s six-month run, ACM will have an all-new 2015 Ford Mustang on display alongside the vintage cars.

The Mustang exhibit’s opening coincides with Father’s Day weekend and ACM’s annual “Hoods Up” event in which the engine bays of more than 100 vehicles can be viewed throughout the 165,000 sq. ft., four-level Tacoma, Wash., museum.

“’Hoods Up’ is consistently one of our most popular events, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see what our vehicles have going on under the sheetmetal,” said Keller. “Dads love it and, inevitably, so do their families.”

“Hoods Up” runs Father’s Day weekend through June 20. Masters of Mustang runs through Dec. 31.
