How many vehicles are in the LeMay Collection? In 1997, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the LeMay Collection as the largest private collection in the world with 2,200 vehicles. However, at one time after that, the LeMay Collection actually exceeded 3,400 vehicles! The LeMay Collection today still stands at over 2,000 vehicles.
What was Marymount before it came to house vehicles from the LeMay Collection? Marymount was purchased in 1919 by the Sisters of St. Dominic in Tacoma, WA. It was 100 acres with a farm house, and it opened as a boy’s military school on May 30
th, 1923. Marymount Academy continued until 1975 when the unpopularity of the Vietnam War persuaded the church to cease its operation of the military school.
The Academy continued as a school that taught English as a second language to foreign-born students, and essentially became a retirement home and convalescent center for the nuns. When the nuns solicited proposals from potential buyers of the property in the 1990's, Harold LeMay’s proposal was the lone bid that would preserve, maintain, and improve the buildings and grounds.
Today, several non-profit groups share space at Marymount, including two church congregations and a senior center, in addition to the LeMay Family Collection Foundation. It is also one of the locations for the annual LeMay Car Show and Auction held on the last Saturday of August.
