1937 Fiat Topolino

The Topolino (Italian for "little mouse", as in Mickey Mouse of Disney fame) was built from 1936 to 1955 as models 500, 500B, and 500C.  At the time of introduction it was one of the smallest cars in the world, having a wheelbase of about 78 inches and a dry weight of 1175 lbs.

It was equipped with a 569 cc four-cylinder, side-valve, water-cooled engine capable of producing 16 hp, it had a four-speed manual transmission.  Its top-speed was about 53 mph and could achieve 39 mpg.  The original engine design was for side valves, but later redesigns resulted in an overhead valve configuration.

The Topolino sold for about 8,900 lire or $500. The car was designed to bring automobile ownership to the masses, being inexpensive and easy to repair.  Nearly 520,000 models of the Topolino were sold worldwide, including about 1000 imported to the United States.
